Our school Arts Program is an integrated part of the curriculum from Primary to Junior High. Once students enter High School, they have the opportunity to continue building on their years of art instruction through credit courses offered by the Department of Education.
Visual & Creative Arts
Primary (K to Gr. 3)
Our primary students have an array of opportunities to experiment with art as they begin to discover their artistic and creative abilities through the use of both traditional and unconventional materials. These young minds get to explore design elements such as line, shape, form, colour, space, and texture; along with design principles that include pattern, repetition, balance, movement, utility, and contrast. They begin to unearth artistic self-expression that builds confidence and promotes critical thinking.
Elementary (Gr. 4 to 6)
During the elementary years, art education moves toward a more experiential and open-ended program where students garner an appreciation for the visual environment. Students draw upon personal experiences, as well as physical, social, and cultural environments as the basis for visual expression. Their visual literacy is developed through describing, comparing, classifying, matching, and manipulating material, content, and reflections. As they grow basic skills in art techniques and processes, so grows their confidence in art expression.
Junior High School (Gr. 7 to 9)
The Junior High program introduces students to visual design and the cinematic arts. The program allows students to develop creative responses through a variety of traditional and contemporary expressions of art through creating, contextualizing, and reflection.
High School (Gr. 10 to 12)
The NL Department of Education offers high school graduation credit courses in Visual Arts at all three high school levels: 1202, 2202, 3202.
Visual Art 1202
is designed as a practical foundational course that can be expanded and elaborated upon in studio courses at higher grade levels. Students build on prior experiences with the elements and principles of design. Students create art using a range of media within the disciplines of drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture.
Visual Art 2202 & 3202
are studio-based courses that support students in further developing their knowledge and skills in visual arts through practical application. They explore a wide range of themes through studio work from painting to sculpting with additional options from printmaking to fibre arts. Students learn to critically analyze artwork and create within contexts across a spectrum of time periods and cultures. Through informed, creative art-making and viewing experiences, students delve into new ideas, materials, and processes for artistic exploration and experimentation.
